A Look at Operation Kindness Humane Society’s Programs

What once started as just an animal shelter has evolved into a lifesaving organization. Now, Operation Kindness Humane Society offers multiple programs to assist people and pets. From offering affordable veterinary services for community pets to hosting a weekly pet food pantry, our organization is doing more than ever to carry out our mission.

Pet Adoptions

While we expand our programs, pet adoptions will continue to be the heart of our mission. In 2025, we helped nearly 6,000 pets find their loving homes. While many of our pets are housed at our 4.5-acre shelter in Carrollton, we also host adoptions offsite at multiple PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus and Petco locations around Dallas-Fort Worth.

Medical Care for Shelter Pets

We provide lifesaving medical care to around 100 shelter animals each day, thanks to our Rees-Jones Foundation Medical Wing at our main shelter in Carrollton. Our medical team performs routine wellness exams, provides essential vaccinations and even conducts major surgeries — all under one roof.

Foster Care

Last year, 3,752 animals were placed in foster homes through our dedicated foster network. Our team matches pets with foster families to help them grow, become more socialized, recover from medical treatment or as a short-term trial before adoption. Fostering pets with us is completely free, and no experience is necessary to apply.

Kitten Nursery

Our neonatal kitten nursery began operating in May 2022 and has helped nearly 3,000 kittens grow healthy and strong. It features warmers, incubators, bottles, formula and dedicated 24-hour trained nursery staff to feed kittens and keep them warm, clean and dry.

Veterinary Services for Community Pets

We are committed to helping pets stay with their families, which is why we formed our Community Initiatives team in July 2022. Understanding the importance of providing affordable and accessible veterinary care, our team provides free or low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics, spay/neuter surgeries and general wellness services for community pets.

Pet Food Pantry

Since the opening of the Dallas St. Clair Pet Food Pantry in 2017, we have distributed hundreds of thousands of pounds of pet food, treats, litter and additional supplies to pets and their families. Our Pet Food Pantry provides temporary food assistance through its bi-weekly pantry events at our main shelter and pop-up events around North Texas.

Interstate Animal Transport

While known primarily for our adoption and foster programs in North Texas, we also transport pets across state lines to find new, loving homes. Our Interstate Animal Transport Program aims to increase lifesaving efforts in Texas and across the southern United States by safely transporting animals from overcrowded southern shelters to northern destination shelters and rescues via ground and air transport.

Emergency and Disaster Response

As part of the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s National Shelter Alliance, our organization assists with disaster response efforts by coordinating transport and receiving animals ahead of hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region.

We are also ready and able to assist with pets impacted by other natural disasters in Texas and neighboring states.

Lifesaving Partnerships Program

Our Lifesaving Partnerships Program partners with Texas shelters to increase live release rates across the state.

Our Community Initiatives team assesses partner shelter operations and provides tailored solutions to improve day-to-day efficiency. This can include establishing medical protocols, providing veterinary support, assisting with data collection, creating community outreach and intake diversion programs and assessing foster, adoption and volunteer programs.

Lifesaving Partnerships Hub

In June 2024, we opened the doors to our Lifesaving Partnerships Hub. This 8,500 square foot building is conveniently located near Dallas Animal Services and allows us to provide veterinary support for North Texas rescue groups, shelters and community pets with a fully-equipped medical suite.

Texas Unites for Animals

In the fall of 2023, Texas Unites for Animals merged with Operation Kindness Humane Society. Now part of our organization, the Texas Unites program provides training and education for animal welfare professionals throughout the state. Our organization has been able to provide greater financial and staff support, along with an expanded audience for Texas Unites’ programming.

Friends of Dallas Animal Services

Friends of Dallas Animal Services (FODAS) officially merged with us in March 2025. By joining forces, we have been able to expand our resources, enhance our impact and provide even more lifesaving care to Dallas animals.

Veterinary Mentorship Program

We launched our Veterinary Mentorship Program in the spring of 2026, in partnership with Mission Pet Health. This program allows early-career veterinarians and 4th-year veterinary students to work alongside our veterinary staff, gaining intensive training in high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter and soft tissue surgical techniques. The goal of this program is to expand access to preventive surgical care across partner shelters, improve community pet health, and inspire emerging veterinary professionals to pursue careers in shelter medicine.
