Our Response to the Central Texas Floods: How We’re Helping Families and Their Pets

Operation Kindness response to Texas Floods

The devastating flooding that struck Central Texas over the July 4th weekend has left our hearts heavy and our resolve stronger than ever. With over 100 lives lost and countless families displaced across Travis, Williamson, and Kerr counties, we knew we had to act quickly to help both the human and animal victims of this tragedy.

As one of Texas’s largest animal welfare organizations, we’ve mobilized our entire team to provide comprehensive disaster relief efforts. This isn’t just about rescuing animals – it’s about supporting the communities we serve through both immediate crisis response and long-term recovery.

Our Immediate Response: Animal Rescue Operations

Tomorrow, Wednesday, July 9th, our intake teams are heading to Williamson County to transfer as many pets as possible from overwhelmed local shelters. By taking in animals that were in shelters prior to the storms, we’re creating crucial capacity for the pets displaced by the flooding. We’re also working closely with our transport team to accommodate additional animals arriving on incoming flights throughout the week.

To create space for animals arriving from the flood-impacted region, we are waiving all dog adoption fees from Tuesday, July 8, to Sunday, July 13.

“Our teams are coordinating efforts with other organizations to be as impactful as possible,” says our CEO Ed Jamison. “As a large organization, we’re able to provide a wide range of services, from pet transport to free pet food, and each department is committed to being part of the relief and rebuild efforts.”

Supporting Pet Owners in Crisis

We know that many flood survivors are struggling to care for their beloved pets during this incredibly difficult time. That’s why next Tuesday, July 15th, our staff will be traveling to Kerrville, Texas, to provide free pantry food for affected pet owners, in coordination with local officials. We’ll have approximately 500 bags of pet food to distribute to anyone in need, ensuring that families can continue caring for their animals when resources are scarce.

This food distribution represents our commitment to being there for communities, not just in the immediate aftermath, but throughout the recovery process. We understand that the needs don’t disappear once the initial emergency response ends.

Our Long-Term Commitment

What makes our disaster response different is our comprehensive timing and approach. We’re not just focused on quick fixes – we’re here for the long haul. As Meredith Jones, our Chief Community Initiatives Officer, explains: “We’re providing a very comprehensive level of support. Not only are we bringing animals into our care with quick turnaround, but we’re also sending our pantry team to provide resources for disaster survivors. We’re also committed to providing relief, resources, and services after the initial outpouring of help has dissipated.”

This sustained support is crucial because we know that recovery takes time. When the media attention fades and the immediate crisis passes, families will still need help rebuilding their lives – and that includes caring for their pets.

The Scope of This Disaster

The Central Texas floods that began on July 4th have been absolutely devastating. At least 104 people have been confirmed dead, with numerous individuals still missing across multiple counties. Search and rescue operations continue throughout the region, with over 237 people rescued from floodwaters during the initial response. The disaster has prompted a Major Disaster Declaration and mobilized emergency response efforts across the affected areas.

Camp Mystic and surrounding areas in Central Texas were among the hardest hit by the catastrophic flooding, with ongoing search and rescue operations still underway in some areas. The floods have impacted families throughout the Austin Independent School District and surrounding communities, creating a ripple effect of need that will last for months to come.

Moving Forward Together

This disaster has reminded us why our work matters so much. In times of crisis, the bond between people and their pets becomes even more important. We’re honored to be part of the response effort, and we’re committed to being here for these communities throughout the recovery process.

Our teams are working around the clock to coordinate these relief efforts, and we’re constantly evaluating how we can expand our support. This is what we do – we show up for animals and the people who love them, in good times and in times of crisis.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to help Central Texas recover and rebuild. We’ll keep you updated on our progress and ongoing efforts in the weeks and months ahead.
