Walking your dog may seem like a daunting task, yet it offers a significant benefit not only for your dog, but also for you. Oct. 1-7 is National Walk Your Dog Week, and we want to share reasons why you should implement daily walks into your routine.
Benefits to Your Dog
The biggest benefit of walking your dog is to maintain a healthy body. Your dog needs to exercise daily to ensure they stay a healthy weight and to support their joint health as they age. Daily walks also provide mental stimulation for your dog. They can sniff the world around them and experience new things.
Many dogs will behave better after they have a walk. This is due to walking being a safe outlet for your dog to spend their extra energy. Often, dogs will partake in destructive behaviors like digging and chewing furniture due to this excess of energy. Additionally, you can improve your dog’s training skills during the walk. From simple commands to walking better on a leash, your dog can learn something new.
Benefits to You
Walking your dog provides many benefits to you, starting with your health. Daily walks can help improve your cardiovascular system, strengthen joint health, and work towards a healthy weight. With each step, your body can lower your blood pressure and your risk of heart attacks.
Your mood will improve as walking releases endorphins, the natural way to get a happiness boost. As a bonus, your bond with your dog will also improve by sharing this experience. Walking with your best friend will help you look forward to and encourage you to continue this routine.
Take a Shelter Dog for a Walk
Don’t have a dog? We have plenty! At Operation Kindness, we have a group of volunteer dog walkers called the Track Pack. This group meets on the first and last Saturdays of the month to take shelter dogs for walks. Track Pack volunteers get to enjoy some exercise and make new friends while our dogs get an opportunity to stretch their legs and use their noses.
Tips for Your Walk
You should never walk in the hottest part of the day or during a heat wave. The best time to walk your dog is early morning or late in the evening, ensuring temperatures are safe for both you and your dog. If you are just starting to walk, keep it short at about 20 minutes. As your furry friend starts walking more and their stamina increases, feel free to lengthen your walking time.
Not all dogs are made to walk the same distance. Older dogs prefer shorter distances, while younger dogs can just keep going. Even breeds differ in preferences, as hunting breeds are instinctively used for longer distances. Remember, no matter what type of walk you go on, always bring water and poop bags!
