In late July, the Alvarado Police Department and Alvarado Animal Control investigated an alleged animal cruelty case involving many animals on a property. During the investigation, over 70 live animals were found at the property. With more than 60 cats and several dogs needing placement in the city’s shelter, Operation Kindness Humane Society stepped up to help the city manage capacity and resource constraints.
Immediately, our team took in cats already in the municipal shelter’s care to be placed for adoption. This helped free up kennels that would be quickly filled when the large intake of animals arrived. As we waited for approval to take in animals connected to the case, our team assisted with testing for respiratory illness with the cats and provided medical support for an injured dog.
As soon as the animals seized from the property were cleared for transfer placement this week, we brought 13 cats from the case into our care. Additionally, we transferred five puppies from the Alvarado shelter, helping free up space and ease the load for their team.
With the animals now at our shelter, the cats are receiving comprehensive medical care, including intake exams, vaccinations and evaluations from our veterinary team. While most are doing well, a few have medical concerns that are being addressed, and several are receiving specialized care in our isolation space in our Rees-Jones Foundation Medical Wing.
