How We Got Started
A group of volunteers founded Operation Kindness Humane Society in 1976 to provide second chances to cats and dogs in North Texas. While our services have expanded beyond animal adoptions, our mission of creating a kinder world for pets and the people who love them has stayed the same.
More Ways We’re Making a Difference
Finding homes for shelter animals is the heart of our work, but we also help community pets stay with the families who love them. Since opening our Dallas St. Clair Pet Food Pantry in August 2017, we have helped thousands of families keep their pets at home. In our 2026 fiscal year alone, we distributed over 456,000 pounds of pet food across Texas.
We have also launched new programs to make veterinary care more accessible. In July 2026, we opened the Dr. Barbara Craig Surgical Mentorship Center to house our Veterinary Mentorship Program (VMP). This program allows early-career veterinarians and fourth-year veterinary students to receive hands-on surgical training along with mentorship from experienced veterinary professionals.
We are also working to make spay/neuter more accessible. Operation Kindness Humane Society is now offering free spay/neuter services for dogs living in eligible ZIP codes.
