Shelter pets love spending time outside their kennels to explore new sights and smells, which is why Operation Kindness Humane Society offers a program called Friends for the Weekend. This program allows fosters to take an adult dog home for one to three days, with the option to extend for long-stay pups who would enjoy some extra family time.
Who is eligible to participate?
To participate in Friends for the Weekend, all you need to do is sign up as an Operation Kindness Humane Society foster volunteer. No volunteer or foster experience is necessary to join.
Fosters receive around-the-clock support from our staff members, and all supplies you will need for a fun-filled weekend will be provided when you pick up your foster pup! To sign up, you must be at least 18 years old. Fill out an application form and start your foster journey today.
Why is Friends for the Weekend important?
Pets are placed in foster homes to help them grow, become socialized, recover from medical treatment or as a short-term trial before adoption. During Friends for the Weekend, we place adult dogs in homes to help us learn about their personalities and help them decompress in a quieter space. The information we learn from the outing, including notes, photos, and videos, helps us place them in new homes.
Can I foster if I have another pet at home?
Even if you have another pet in your household, you are still eligible for Friends for the Weekend. Our behavior team has packets filled with tips and tricks on how to slowly introduce your pet to your foster. If you have any questions while fostering, our team members are always available to assist.
Where are places I can take my foster dog?
There are so many dog-friendly places to explore in Dallas-Fort Worth. For some indoor time to beat the summer heat, the Half Price Books flagship store is a great place to take your furry companion to enjoy a quiet bonding activity.
If your pup is feeling energized and ready to go on a walk, then enjoy a short hike at the Cedar Ridge Preserve. Once you reach the top of the trail, you can snap a picture with a panoramic view to remember the special day!

Kindness on the Go
If you are interested in fostering for only a day, then Kindness on the Go might be the right fit for you! Through this program, foster volunteers can take dogs on short day trips, giving the dogs a fun outing while increasing their exposure to potential adopters. To take a dog out, register as a foster, come by our main shelter in Carrollton and staff will help match you with a furry friend.
