Meet Starlight! VERY SPECIAL PERSON WANTED! Animal: Dog Breed: Catahoula Hound Mix Sex: Female Age: 3 months Size: 15lbs ID: 62149

Starlight is a 3-month-old Catahoula mix that was born at Operation Kindness along with her 9 siblings.  While in foster home Starlight began having stomach issues and was unable to keep her food down. Upon returning to the shelter at eight weeks old, she did not go up for adoption; rather she went under observation to determine what was causing her medical condition.  At 10 weeks old, after extensive testing and x-rays, Starlight was diagnosed with Megaesophagus, a condition that causes a decrease of muscular contractions of the esophagus.

When the esophagus cannot function properly, instead of food taking its natural course, the animal is unable to keep it down, preventing the absorption of needed nutrients. Although Starlight has this condition, she has steadily gained weight, and has maintained a healthy demeanor.  She is a thriving and mischievous 12-week-old puppy.  Click here to see Starlight in action!

We are looking for a special person willing to adopt Starlight and provide her with the minimal care she needs.  Her care consists of: 

• Serving her food in an elevated feeder
• After she consumes her food, she will need to be kept upright for 20 minutes so that the food will be ingested. Click here to watch the video.
• A prescription drug for nausea is necessary so a good rapport with your vet is recommended.

Even with this condition, Starlight is a happy, vibrant, growing puppy that needs a chance at life.  Megaesophagus is irreversible but Starlight could live with this condition for many years.  With a patient and loving owner,  Starlight will have her chance for happiness.
