INTAKE AND FOSTER PROGRAM coORDINATOR

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position has dual responsibilities:  Animal Intake (developing and implementing the policies through which animals are taken into the shelter) and developing and maintaining the Foster Program, through which animals are placed in temporary foster homes.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Animal Intake Program

  • Schedules daily animal intake
  • Coordinates animal transfers from other shelters and rescuers
  • Counsels the public about training and behavior issues
  • Provides written resources for the public in training, behavior issues, public programs and other placement options
  • Responds to phone calls and emails regarding animal surrender
  • Photographs incoming animals and write brief description of each animal
  • Enters animal intake information into shelter management system

Foster Care Program

  • Recruits, Interviews, screens, trains and supervises foster volunteers
  • Develops and implements foster program policies and protocols
  • Monitors animals’ mental and physical well-being while in the shelter and in foster homes
  • Identifies socialization and training issues in foster animals and makes recommendations for addressing them
  • Maintains the Foster Log

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Minimum one year of significant experience working as a volunteer or staff member in an animal care environment (animal welfare organization, animal rescue/adoption organization, animal shelter or veterinary clinic)
  • Two years experience in customer service or an animal care environment
  • Basic knowledge of digital camera use including downloading to computer
  • Basic knowledge of dog and cat breeds
  • Highly motivated and dependable
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deal with many diverse situations
  • Good level of telephone etiquette and customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks at once
  • Proficient in MS-Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Loves animals
