Director of Development

Regular Full-time position available

Start Date: Immediate

POSITION OVERVIEW

Oversees and executes all fundraising activities including major gifts, grant writing, direct mail campaigns, fundraising events, donor cultivation and planned giving. Forecasts and achieves annual department budget. Supervises special event, marketing/communications and other development staff as necessary.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Strategic Planning

  • Prepare a multi-year strategic Development Plan for Operation Kindness.

    Grant Writing

  • Based upon identified needs within organization, researches corporations, foundations and private individuals and solicits for possible funding opportunities.
  • Prepares, submits and follows up on proposals in a timely manner.
  • Develops relationships with foundations to gain better understanding of their grant process.
  • Attends seminars and networking functions.

    Direct Mail Campaigns

  • Works with the Executive Director to plan and implement direct mail campaigns.
  • Tracks response rates, average donations and other relevant data to ensure maximum identification of contribution database.

    Fundraising Events

  • Supervises and works with special event staff to conduct special events throughout the year.
  • Attends special events committee meetings as necessary.
  • Secures sponsorships and donations for each event.
  • Maintains relationships with event donors and sponsors, and continually recruits new sponsors.

    Donor Cultivation

  • Develops a strategic plan for cultivation and stewardship of current and new donors and sponsors. Prepares a schedule that recognizes different levels of giving with different levels of thanks and appreciation events or items.
  • Develops opportunities for donors to support particular projects (for example, memorial bricks, naming rights, cage sponsorships, event sponsorships).
  • Invites potential donors and existing donors to shelter for personal tours.
  • Maintains frequent contact and nurtures positive relationships with major donors through timely phone calls, emails, visits, recognition and responsiveness to requests.
  • Ensures that the donor database is updated timely and accurately.
  • Ensures that all donors receive thank you notes within one week of receipt of the donation and that donors who contribution $200 or more receive a personal thank you letter.
  • Provides all monthly electronic funds transfer donors with a thank you letter and monthly or year-end statement of donations.

    Planned Giving

  • Develops and promotes planned giving program.
  • Recruits appropriate professionals to offer expertise in specific areas of planned giving, including wills and bequests, charitable remainder unit rusts, charitable gift annuities, pooled income funds, life insurance contract, life estates, charitable lead trusts and gifts of appreciated property.

    Marketing and Community Outreach

  • Supervises Marketing staff to ensure consistent marketing message in all OK collateral and proper use of OK logo online/offline
  • Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to select, schedule, and manage community outreach events.
  • Identifies and speaks at community events.

    General Responsibilities

  • Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect Director of Animal Care, Director of Operations or Executive Director immediately.
  • Reports any unsafe working conditions Director of Animal Care, Director of Operations or Executive Director immediately.
  • Follows Standard Precautions and other safety regulations at all times.
  • Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Executive Director.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

    Education Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in marketing or related area.
  • Experience Requirements

  • 3-5 years experience in fund development and/or marketing with a proven record of success.
  • Background in nonprofit preferable.
  • Personal Requirements

  • Feels and expresses a genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal care environment.
  • Supports Operation Kindness’s mission and understands how it is organized and functions as a non-profit organization.

  • Has exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Is able to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Is proficient in MS applications, including Word, Outlook, Excel and Publisher.
  • Is able to plan strategically and implement programs and projects.
  • Has a positive attitude; is open to new ideas.
  • Physical Effort: : Position requires lifting and carrying animals and shelter materials weighting up to 40 lbs; when animals or materials weigh over 40 lbs, another staff member will assist in the lifting and carrying. Position also requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time and speaking over the telephone.
  • Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and animal diseases.
  • Compensation

  • Position is permanent, full-time and exempt.
  • Compensation varies.
