Mimi’s Story

(updated 2/19/08)

Mimi, a 13-year-old Golden Retriever Mix, was in a house fire with her owner and his adult son on Wednesday, February 13th. Neighbor, Darvin Flynn, came to Mimi’s rescue when he saw her on the floor of the home unconscious and on fire. He used a garden hose through a window to suppress the flames until firemen could remove her from the burning home. Firemen gave her oxygen and chest compression until she was breathing on her own.

Unfortunately Mimi’s owner, who was in critical condition at Parkland Hospital, died early Thursday morning from his injuries. His son escaped with minor injuries from broken glass.

Operation Kindness is getting Mimi the critical care she needs for the severe burns to her muzzle, eyes, and the inside of her mouth and nose. She is in guarded condition at this time due to the severity of her burns.

Great News! Mimi began eating today. She will be able to be released from the hospital on Thursday 2/21/08, and she will be brought back to Operation Kindness where she will still need hydrotherapy every day along with several types of medication to avoid infection. The swelling on her nose is almost back to normal and though she will be scarred, we think she will completely heal. She still has a cough; however, we can take care of that with therapy each day. Keep Mimi in your prayers and we will continue to give updates on her.

After her stay at the vet, Mimi has been recovering at Operation Kindness for the last 2 weeks. As expected her delicate facial tissue is sloughing off, including her nose, and she will be permanently disfigured. However, we do not think this should interfere with the quality of her life. Our staff continues to give her the necessary treatment she needs including daily hydrotherapy and medication to avoid infection and to control her pain. Additionally, she still is coughing a bit and we have begun couping treatment to treat this.

Mimi is still eating well, and really enjoys her outside walks and attention from OK staff members. Despite all that she has been through she has an amazing attitude. We will keep monitoring her to determine our next course or treatment for her recovery. Please keep her in your prayers and we'll update you soon.

On Sunday, March 30th Mimi finally got to go to her new, forever home! Mimi's new owner, Judyann, saw Mimi on television and was so moved by her story that she came in the next day to adopt her. Although Mimi wasn't quite ready to go home at that point, Judyann waited patiently and came to visit Mimi as often as she could. Once Mimi healed a bit more, Operation Kindness decided to let her go to her new home to finish her recovery. Mimi will still need medication for her eyes and lungs to help them repair, but we are confident her best recovery will happen in her new loving home.

Judyann reports that Mimi is loving her new house and family. She reports that Mimi gets attention everywhere she goes, loves to romp in the backyard, is very interested in her cat, and loves to sleep at the foot of her bed.

Operation Kindness wishes to thank Judyann and all of the others who have expressed concern Mimi. Our gratitude also goes to those of you who have made donations to help pay for her costly medical treatment.
